Professional Development Statement

In my first year of the LDT Doctoral Program, four activities significantly contributed to my professional development: participating in an innovation project, writing theories and scholars' essays, meeting LDT faculty, collaborating with other students on a research project, and engaging in mentoring sessions with my major professor. The innovation project fostered hands-on learning, allowing me to acquire new skills like prototyping and video editing using Adobe Creative Suite applications. Completing theories and scholars' essays also expanded my understanding of theories in LDT and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Teaching and Learning. The collaborative research project has allowed me to explore and gain insights into virtual reality and learning, refine research abilities such as data analysis, critical thinking, and scholarly writing, and build my teamwork capability. Furthermore, meeting LDT faculty provided insights into research areas within LDT, while mentoring sessions with my major professor emphasized the application of learned skills in scholarly activities.  These experiences have enhanced my confidence in concepts like social constructivism and second language writing, aligning with my research interests in online peer feedback in EFL classes. Moreover, extensive reading and practice with Adobe Creative Suite applications have further bolstered my skills and confidence.

Regarding research experience, I participated in a study examining undergraduate students' interpretation of various visual representations within instructional design flow diagrams. I played a role in data analysis and visually representing the findings. Subsequently, the outcomes of this study were presented at the SOTL Common Conference in 2024. This conference experience served as inspiration for embarking on a pilot study with a colleague from my hometown, focusing on online peer feedback in EFL classes. Additionally, we are collaborating on crafting a proposal for the AECT Convention in 2024.

Upon completing the program, I would like to contribute to Education system of my home country, Indonesia, particularly in the English language teaching fields. My research interest revolves around technology use in English as a Foreign Language classroom.  It is hoped that by exploring these research ideas that I would gain the required knowledge and expertise to develop a better technology-assisted/mediated instruction for English as a foreign language in my home country.
